KPop Demon Hunters Goes “Golden” at the Oscars

KPop Demon Hunters Goes “Golden” at the Oscars

I must admit, I was late to the game watching KPop Demon Hunters, but since watching it a month ago, I have totally understood the hype and now consider myself a fan of the movie and of singer/songwriter EJAE. I was so excited when it won for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for Golden at the Academy awards in March.

You know the drill, queue the playlist and let’s dive into the music!

KPop Demon Hunters follows a K-Pop group called Huntrix who are secretly demon hunters, using their voices and careers as singers to eradicate the earth of demons. Rumi, the leader of the group, tries to hide the fact that she is actually part demon, but ends up losing her voice and must come to terms with who she really is. Are all demons bad? Will her friends accept her? Can she protect the Honmoon and defeat the demons trying to take over Earth?

Stantout Music Moment

Golden – The main and most popular track of the film, dives into the main three characters insecurities and emotional struggles. It sounds like a powerful song about believing in ones self, which it is, but it also drives the plot of the movie, Rumi coming to terms with who she is – part demon.

The singer of Rumi and one of the songwriters EJAE, had a similar situation to overcome much like Rumi’s. EJAE was on track to be a K-Pop idol when her label deemed her too tall with a voice too low and husky to be a K-Pop star. From there she turned to songwriting to deal with her depression over being dropped as a singer. Within the recording of Golden you can hear EJAE’s passion as if she’s expressing how she overcame her own adversity.

I think it is such a full circle moment for her to be proving those label executive wrong with her world wide success and stardom through Golden and KPop Demon Hunters.
