5 Tips to make the most of your music blog

5 Tips to make the most of your music blog

After writing my first handful of blogs, I have learned a few tricks to creating a successful blog post specifically on the topic of music. There is a lot of noise (pun intended) on the internet around music, artists and the industry, and it can be hard to be heard. Here are my top 5 tips for making the most out of your music blog.

For today’s blog post playlist, I have chosen songs that are all in 5/4, isn’t that fun?! My favourite is 15 Step by Radiohead. If you are a music theory nerd like me, take a look HERE at a video of how to conduct in 5/4.

Queue the playlist and let’s jump into some tips and tricks that will help you with your music blog!

1. The Music

This first tip may seem like a no-brainer, but when talking about music, it is so important to have the actual music you are talking about available to your audience. My favourite way to share the music and artists I talk about is through a Spotify playlist that I embed at the bottom of every blog post. This allows your blog reader to fully immerse themselves in what you are saying by listening to the music you are talking about while reading your post. I like referring to specific songs on albums or playlists, highlighting interesting elements and facts about them. Another way to incorporate music into your blog is to have a dedicated playlist page like I do, access it HERE.

2. Photos and Videos

In today’s world, unfortunately, we all have the attention span of a goldfish… So using photos and videos in your blog posts will keep your readers engaged and encourage them to continue reading. There is so much content on music, interviews with artists, album covers, playlists, music websites, photoshoots, music videos, I could go on and on. Sprinkling photos and videos throughout your posts will not only make them visually appealing but also keep the attention of your audience.

3. Trending topics

Music is constantly discussed in the media, and a great way to amplify your blog is to cover trending music topics. Whether it’s a new release of an album or even if it’s pop culture adjacent to music, you can talk about them both. I have found this to be very useful in my own blog and writing. For example, I covered the music used in the film Hamnet around the time of the Academy Awards. This film and its score were nominated for many Oscars, which gave me additional content to write about, as well as a highly talked-about, trending topic. Writing using trending topics helps you to reach further and stay in the loop with your target audience, as well as possibly reaching new viewers.

Hey, I’m in my 30’s, so I get it, trends can be tough to stay up to date on. Try your best, it can really help your blog be seen!

4. Your Opinion Matters

Music is art, and art is subjective; it’s alright to have a difference of opinion (unless you are using your ‘opinion’ as an excuse to say crappy stuff, that’s not cool). Sharing your own unique thoughts on music is a great way to start conversations, especially in the comments with your readers. Be open to hearing others’ opinions as well, you never know, maybe you’ll learn something new, or have a change of opinion yourself.

5. Call to Action

Having a clear call to action is a must for any successful blog post. It helps to engage with your audience, and like tip #4, it can lead to conversations in the comments. Personally, I like to include two call to actions in every blog post. The first encourages the reader to listen to whatever playlist or music I am talking about, and the second call to action lets my readers know that I want to hear from them! I always ask my readers to post in the comments about their opinion on whatever music topic I have covered. I love talking about the music used in film and television, so having a call to action is a way for me to connect with a community that also enjoys talking about this topic.

Those are my 5 tips to make the most out of your music blog! I hope you found them helpful and insightful.
